Which site is preferable for uploading my video - YouTube or Vimeo?
-
I have a short film that I want to release. It's a work of art, but I want it to go viral. As an artist I feel people respect Vimeo more, but YouTube gets more hits. What do you recommend?
-
Answer:
In my opinion, definitely VIMEO. I have a personal account there as well as a group I started with members contributing film such as you speak of that are from countries around the world. It is a more respected community of artists and there are rarely ever any negative critique or feed back such as with you tube! Also, I would recommend researching the history behind Vimeo and You Tube in regard to who owns them, the type of advertising, if any on Vimeo if not the type you would want to see relevant to being a Vimeo member or new camera equipment, competitions that glorify your work, Vimeo projects that are focused on bringing back to life the form of "arts" in Video. Moby, Nine Inch nails, film production companies, soundcloud, and others partner with Vimeo to offer chances to be inspired, upload your work securely with more options and control over filtering out the bad content or peoples links that you see all too often on You Tube. It is free to join and plus and pro accounts are priced very well. I am upgrading soon. With a free account, I have been able to upload very high quality HD as an option along with meeting truly dedicated artists world wide. Vimeo also offers online video tutoring/school for free on topics in every aspect of furthering your desire to learn more with aspects or programs in Video making. They also are dedicated to making their company stronger from within such as the jobs created in the US and support team. I hold Vimeo in the highest regard in reference to furthering my career in film, audio/ sound production, and webdesign.

Vimeo definitely favors short films. If you're just looking for a lot of views then YouTube. Personally for that type of project I'd go Vimeo though. This blog here really lays out the differences well though http://hubs.ly/H02L3FQ0

"Work of art" and "viral" don't often work well together. The latest YouTube craze is rarely arty! Wanting it to go viral is never enough. You might have a million hit wonder but the odds for an "arty" short films are very low, this is not a format well adapted to YouTube and the competition for eyeballs is huge so for those reasons you're probably better off focusing just on the "arty" side and use Vimeo.
