I tracked my stolen iPhone with "Find My iPhone" two years after it was stolen. What should I do?
-
Two years ago I left my iPhone inside a magazine on a shelf in Ikea and didn't realise it was gone until I was back at home. I was one of the last people out of the store so I went back first thing the next day and it was gone and no one could help me. It was pretty distressing since it was a brand new phone. I had Find My iPhone set up back then but it didn't show anything whenever I tried it. So over time I bitterly accepted. Today I was trying to find my current iPhone (just left in my house somewhere). Found it no problem - but then I saw another iPhone was displaying in the app! I have no other Apple products attached to the app, so it seems definite that this is my phone. It shows as being in small town just outside of my city. Using Google Maps it's pretty easy to narrow it down to a couple of houses where it probably is. There's no guarantee this person is the thief, they could of course bought it without knowing where it came from. So what should I do? Should I simply ignore it? Or use the 'erase' and 'block' function on the Find My iPhone App? Can I report this to Apple? Any chance of ever getting it back? Curious about the best course of action.

Answer:
That phone is still logged into the App Store with your Apple ID. I would not be too happy about that. Maybe you should let the phone go but it needs to be off your account. I would confront the person whether they obtained it legally or illegally, give them the option to remove your info from the settings in front of you or tell them you will wipe it. Their choice. But there is no way I would leave it attached to my Apple ID.

Just restore it. They'll be locked out of the phone, considering it's on iOS 7. And it should teach them a good lesson.

I'd let it go but you need to get your Apple ID disassociated. I don't know a way of doing that without access to the phone. Maybe they switched Apple IDs for purchass. Was this before or after iCloud was availible and did you use it?
