Teachers understand that student behavior is a communication. The way to control unwanted behavior is to understand why it exists. What is the student communicating? Why? Some students have learning disabilities like ADHD, autism, cognitive disabilities, emotional disturbance (such as but not limited to PTSD); hearing, seeing or processing issues medically caused -- and no teacher would want to punish a child for her or his disabilities. In the USA under IDEA and state laws, punishing a student for behavior which is a result of ("manifestation of") a disability would be discriminatory and illegal. Assuming a student with disabilities exhibits disruptive behavior the first course of action is to get an IEP along with a functional behavior analysis and, if indicated, a positive behavior intervention plan. Punishment is not an option. We intervene to promote behaviors we want to see only in the most severe of instances, via pbip (positive behavior intervention plan) which is written after a functional behavior analysis. If you beat a student in the USA expect to lose your job and to be prosecuted for child abuse. You also cannot expel or reduce the educational hours because a child has disruptive behavior as part of their disability. Let's say the students who misbehave do not have disabilities. What could their teacher do? Here are some ideas: Call in the principal and ask for a mentor teacher to teach you classroom management skills. Call in their parents for a conference. Give the student homework to write and illustrate two comic strips illustrative of their objectionable behavior. Ask them to show what happened in the first comic strip -- and in the second, what could have been done differently to improve the situation. Whatever you do should be done privately. Shaming a child makes you shameful and the kids will lose their respect for you. Punishing a child is not the school's job. You should not ever consider hitting a child as a method of behavior control.

Here are five effective ways to discipline kids: Encouraging others.  Getting left out of encouragement can change behavior.  This can take the form of encouragement or asking a kid what they should be doing. Time out. (this works both during classroom activity and for outside activities) Not getting snack. (this is usually a 3 strikes type policy, although without using the word strikes) Talking to their parents.  Or sending a letter to their parents. Going to the principles office. I don't understand this one fully, but sometimes ignoring the event can help minimize it.

Punishing   them or screaming at them will never wprks with a naughty kid. Instead, try   to make him sit and work on any work like colouring, painting or any other.   Or you could give him monitoring responsibilites and keep him from running   around wild. My kid’s school Orchids International used to report about kid’s   behaviour to parents. This helps parents to know about their kids and also to   help teachers in disciplining their kids.
