What is the break-even sales unit?

In the wholesale flower markets (B2B), what is the standard sales unit?

  • Kgs? I'm doing a market research, which is the standard sales unit, tons or m3? and. how many Kg would fit in an aerial container like RAP?

Speaking from an auction perspective, the following appears to be the industry standard at least in and around the Netherlands. Cut flowers are priced per stem but sold per packaging unit. This could be something like a bucket, a box or a bunch. There are various standardized packaging materials. (See http://www.floraholland.com/en/supplying/logistics/logistic-supplies/packaging/packaging-catalogue/, actual catalogue is unfortunately only in Dutch.) The number of stems per unit is fixed per lot, but can vary between lots depending on the type of flowers, their size, the type of packaging, etc. Plants are priced per piece and also sold per packaging unit. Smaller plants could be sold by the tray, larger/expensive plants are often sold separately (a single plant being considered a 'packaging unit', with or without pot). Transport through Western Europe usually happens by truck, with trucks being advertised as being able to hold a certain number of CC containers or auction trolleys. These are standardized types of trolleys. I've seen trucks with a capacity of 43 CC containers. Packaging materials are often designed to pack nicely (tightly) on these containers. For some examples, check out http://www.floraholland.com/en/supplying/logistics/logistic-supplies/packaging/floratino/assortment/ for some information on Floratino trays. They are designed to fit four onto a CC layer. Depending on the height of the plants, you could fit up to six CC layers in a single CC container. With 43 CC containers in a truck, that's 6192 to 22704 plants per trucks, depending on pot size. This still doesn't say much about the total weight. Other than that (or even including that), I know very little about the logistics of shipping flowers and plants.
