How does a GPS unit work?

Do Garmin GPS units work in Mexico? If so, how can I download Mexico maps to my unit?

    The (garmin) GPS works everywhere but it depends on the unit and what maps you bought with it if you can download new maps to it. You may also be able to buy a map for Mexico but you have to go to http://Garmin.com and see what your options are.

As rightly said in the previous answer, the device works everywhere (well, almost everywhere, except in deep canyons etc.), in that you can get your coordinates. If you need not only your position coordinates but also a map, please clarify whether you need a street map for a GPS device in your car, or a topo map for a handheld GPS you are going to use for trekking or climbing, etc.
