Provisional license to regular license in CA q?

Does a CA Commercial Driver License let me drive regular vehicles as well?

  • I do not currently have any driver's license. If I get a CDL, can I also drive normal vehicles, or would I need to get an additional, separate, regular class C driver license?

    You are good to go with a CDL, you can drive everything but a motorcycle. However, the exam is much more difficult than the Class C license exam, you'll need plenty of preparation and significant experience driving a big rig, which is difficult to attain on your own, you should check out a CDL driving school.

Yes, but as others have pointed out, without knowledge of driving a standard vehicle, obtaining a CDL will be challenging. Also, most states require a seperate license to operate a motorcycle.

A commercial license does allow you to drive normal vehicles.  You say you don't have a license, but do you know how to drive?  If you do not know how to drive conventional vehicles, then you should probably learn that before attempting to learn heavier vehicles.

Yes.  That is because some of the things tested by the CDL exam pertain to ordinary non commercial vehicles.  Of course converse is not so. Backing a tractor trailer rig  properly or even taking turns on the road is a specialized art.  Why?  The tractor takes a slightly different track than the trailer.  Also braking is a special art.  Improper braking can cause jack knifing.

A CDL from any US State or Canadian province allows you to drive any personal passenger vehicle or light-duty passenger pickup truck. Motorcycle licences are usually a separate endorsement requiring additional testing.
