How do you get your own website address?

How do I get users to sign up for my website with their personal email address instead of their work email address?

  • I just launched a career website and we're getting people to sign up. But because it's related to career development, a lot of people are putting in their work email address. We'd prefer them to input their personal email address. How do we ask for this? I feel like saying "Personal email address" would make people a bit suspicious.

  • Answer:

Yes, it would make them suspicious. People naturally value the privacy of their personal email higher than that of their work email. You need to provide them something that you didn't provide here -- a good reason that they would want to give their personal email address, with some clear value over giving their work email. What do they get for the added risk of spamming, etc?

Search on your database for unusual emails (different from gmail, hotmail, yahoo..) and alert them with a modal: "Hey! Are you using your personal email?" or you can use oAuth (social login) like Facebook, Twitter and Google Accounts.

I would do two things.  In the placeholder for the email change the text to "Your BEST Email Address". Then, in small text below the email entry, I would add "Want to keep your job search a safe secret... use your personal email address." The placeholder text will get people curios, but the sub-text sells the benefit. At least then you know they are making a conscious choice to job search with their work email address. The reality is that a crazy number of people use their work email addresses for job searching. I used to review resumes and interview people for open positions on my team all the time and I was shocked at the number of people that did this even further along in the process. I would approach in following way.. Almost everyone has their personal email address on these FREE email service providers.. 1. gmail.com 2 yahoo.com. com, yahoo.co.in, yahoo.in, countriwise domains 3. hotmail.com 4. Outlook.com 5. rediffmail. com 6. aol.com This will comprise 90% of your domains used for personal email address. So when someone signs up, make sure the email id has following domain during validation. else request the user to enter a valid FREE ESP domain.
