What was the very First Search Engine to come out on the net?

How did you first come to know about "this new search engine" named Google? What was the story?

  I think it was back in 2002. I had to do some holiday homework for school, and I was stumped as to how to collect all the information required for the project. I sought to call one of my friends who had a computer at that time, and asked him what to do (He had boasted a lot of times that he used this "Internet" thingy for doing all his research). I just knew about Yahoo at that time and he told me as much. Just as I was about to hang up, he mentioned Google in passing. When I got to a cyber cafe and logged into Yahoo, I couldn't get much help, unfortunately. But Google was like a God-sent gift, everything was there. It's a cliche - but it really felt as if the world was at my fingertips. I had to be dragged down to the car by my father, so busy I was searching cool stuff (At least those things which would be cool for a 10-year old). And here I am, 11 years later, swearing by Google, along with billions of other people.
