Where can I get Argentinian pesos in London?

I just changed my Philippine pesos to Hong Kong dollars at 6.8 pesos to 1 dollar. Did I get completely screwed over?

  • As of 12/6/11, the conversion on Google is 5.6. I changed over 17,000 pesos, and lost basically a peso per dollar -- 2600 pesos in all. That's nearly $60 US. What just happened? Does everyone buy at this number????

  • Answer:

Philippine Pesos should be changed at Worldwide-House, where the Filipino stores are. The rates are higher, I presume because they can sell the pesos to the Filipino community right there.

I agree with and would like to make an additional point.  I had some PHP to exchange last time I was in Hong Kong and I went around to several money changers and discovered that it was necessary to bargain with them to get the best rate.

The value on the currency exchange and the exchange rates seen as exchange kiosks are always different. The difference in value is the payment you are making to the exchange or bank that makes your currency transaction possible. But, yes. a $60 fee on a conversion of around $400 US dollars seems excessive. 5.6 divided by 6.8 is 82%, which means they are charging 18% to convert cash. This is why I guess that you are at a kiosk at an airport, rather than at an international bank. A bank would have lower rates.
