I hate my job now what should I do?

I am 23 and working in an IT company and like a lot of people out there I hate my job. I am preparing for MBA and I am quite serious about it but getting into a good school will also take around 1.5 years from now on and I cant even wait that long. What should I do?

  • I'm keen on pursuing something I like, say for e.g like travelling as much as I can, theaters, sports, volunteering works etc where I can meet new people and get to do a variety of things everyday. What should I do? Joining  a theatre seems unrealistic ( as I don't have any prior experience) also I can't compromise with my preparations at any cost. I know it seems very vague and directionless but please help.

As someone who has gone through your exact experience, I can offer my 2cents.  You need to be absolutely clear about what YOU want, and specifically how MBA will help you get there.  This means you'll need to know what function you want to get into (finance, BD, marketing, consulting, etc) and what industry you want to get into (chem? oil & gas? pharma?)  While you can definitely explore while you're in MBA, those with clear sight usually go further down the road. Now, MBA shouldn't be the only way -- there are other options you can choose.  You can apply to other companies or even quit and travel around the world.  Or you can freelance or start a company.  Unless you have pile of debt to repay, quitting actually isn't the end of the world as society forced us to think. I went down the MBA path without a clear idea of what I want to do and where I want to be.  I ended up in a gig that paid decently well but somewhat where I started -- not happy with it and looking for something I truly want to do.

Have you figured out what is the one thing that you are good at? I believe this is the time you can utilize in order to excel in that particular field. If you are interested in theater (since you have mentioned it explicitly), try to find out some short term courses at a nearby college.etc. to build up your skills. Or if you are interested in volunteering, try applying in Teach For India and similar organizations.  Why do you hate your job? You must have a very good answer for this question. Whatever the reasons please keep them in mind before you apply anywhere else or you might end up down the same path. Please keep in mind that the preparation for the MBA entrance exams does not necessarily demand that you undertake a 10 hour study ordeal. 2-3 hours is sufficient provided you find time for its preparation. Or you could take a few months off from whatever work you are doing and focus solely on the exams.

It doesnt matter what sector you get into, your expectations are pretty unrealistic with regards to you experience. IT is your best bet at getting some of that freedom faster but you have to prove yourself in the field. I agree with one of the other posts that you need to first figure out WHY you want an MBA, and how that MBA will help you get to WHERE you want to go. I would recommend against making that change until you can answer those questions. MBAs are expensive and not always necessary for what you want to achieve. You may want to first reevaluate what your expectations were when you went into IT and how realistic they were. Then do the same with what you are looking for right now. Clearly you are putting the cart before the horse, especially since you question is vague and you seem to think that being directionless is a bad thing, the latter that can be easily correct once you figure out what you want and what you need to get it. What you are experiences is a crisis that you are unhappy where you are but have no idea where you want to be, leaping into an MBA program as a means to escape. It is always better to go somewhere than to leave somewhere, but an MBA is not a destination but a preparation on how to run a company, something that is clearly not evident from your question. There is no guarantee is that you will be happy doing managerial work especially since IT has a lot of management in it. Rather than jump into graduate school, I suggest that you look for another IT job. If you are interested in getting into a good school, you need to focus on accomplishment and to prepare for the MCAT.

you are just 23. you hate your job then quit job and start studying seriously.you will succeed .do not travel on two ships.if you go to office your mind will roam around preparration.even iam experiencing it,i decided to quit. you hate the job,so after coming from office you cannot study seriously because all the bitter experiences will stop you from studying. leave the job ,so you can get ample of time.even this depend on your financial status.if your family completely depends on you.then work and study but cut enjoyments your travels etc... remove fear work hard. u will succeed.you have lot of time to settle in your life.if your family is not depends on you then quit.the job. IT is the field where your talent cannot be takenout.ALl the best
