If I live with my girlfriend, then am I eligible to get health insurance from her employer?
-
She will be working for a hospital as a nurse, and health insurance is amongst her benefits. We are not married, but will live together (i.e., live-in partners.) Am I eligible to get health insurance through her employer? I recognize that this will ultimately come out of her paycheck in some way, but I would pay her back each month to make up for the difference, and we would do this only if the premiums are more competitive after doing so. We are not a same-sex couple.

Answer:
What state are you in? The answer is not so cut and dry, but dependent on how her many emplyees on the plan, where the employee coverage exists, what state she lives and the overage is issued-- Some states do not recognize domestic partners or civil unions, while others do. On the requirements set by that state and because insurance is regulated federally, I would suggest checking http://www.healthcare.gov/ via their selection tool to see the contacts in your state, as well as checking in with 2-3 local insurance agents, actively licensed and appointed to discuss healthcare. Sometimes the coverage is less for dependents and other times (because the employer is typically only required to cover 75% of the employee's coverage) the mid size company can choose to pay some or all of the dependents covered. With that said, most group plans are higher than individual insurance. I would suggest checking out individual policies, you may be surprised how affordable some can be. Check out http://ehealthinsurance.com for options and quick rates,in addition to the 2-3 local agents/brokers (again depends on the state you reside in) Hope that helps!

Have her check with her HR department. Some employers, and some insurance plans/carriers will cover domestic partners but it depends on the state you are in and the way her coverage plan is set-up. As Nicole pointed out, there will probably be some additional cost if they cover partners, but group coverage is usually much better than individual coverage. If they do not cover domestic partners, or if you don't meet the requirements (for example you have not been together long enough) as long as you are healthy an individual plan can be reasonably priced. I would recommend looking at a Health Savings Account Plan if you have the option.
