I am an international student and will be a freshman of UIUC this fall. I want to major in psychology badly but most of my upperclassmen and teachers suggest that it's hard to find a job after graduation. What is the future of a psychology graduate like? What are the possible jobs that relate to it?

Answer:
While I wasn't a psychology major, many of my friends were. One of them went on to get his PhD in school psychology, to work in a school. One went on to get their PhD in psychology, and she plans to work in a hospital or private practice. Another just finished her M.A in speech pathology, which is a lucrative field. Finally, another friend got their M.A in psychology and now works for a pro-choice non-profit doing event planning and outreach. That's just to give you an example of what's possible. However, you'll notice all those people had to go on to get more degrees. It turns out that it's pretty difficult to get a job with a psychology degree right out of undergrad, unless you want to work in a research lab for low pay and few growth opportunities. Most people in psychology want to be a psychologist. If you want to be a psychologist, you will need your PhD. In order to get into a program that will pay for you to be there (and trust me you do NOT want to pay for your PhD), you will have to take two years after college to work in a lab. In your second year at the lab you will take your GREs and apply to programs. If you don't get any funding, you will spend another year at the lab and then reapply. Once you are in the program, it takes about five years before you graduate and can either become a professor, work in a hospital, work in a private practice, or start your own practice.

I graduated from UIUC in 2009 in the college of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Psychology was one of the most popular majors for freshmen, and the intro course was known to be a blatantly tedious weed-out course. Also, when upperclassmen AND teachers/professors say "doing X is a bad idea" then its a really really bad idea.

Psychology in America is a degree that is normally used to prepare you for other degrees, a stepping stone, if you will. It is not a professional degree that allows you do anything significant in the field of psychology unless you have a masters or Ph.D. with an undergrad in psychology, don't work as "psychologists". They often put their degree to work in other disciplines. For instance, you could work as the following: Case Management http://psychology.about.com/od/psychologycareerprofiles/p/career-counselor.htm Rehabilitation Specialist Psychiatric Technician Social worker However, those degree listed above are often "oversaturated" and don't pay handsomely. You could also use you psychology bachelor degree to work in Human resources for a business. But, if that doesn't attract you, and you really want to work in psychology, you might want to think about GRAD school. In my opinion, if I were you I would go to another foreign country to go to school, a country were a bachelor degree in psychology could be put to work. Because, American tends to over extend the university requirements for school. Its only 6 years to become a doctor in England and 4 years to become an optometrist but in American the schooling is doubled! So, that being said, if you want to continue education after you bachelors degree in psychology, you will have waaaay more doors open for you. For instance, the possible career with a professional degree include the following. Mental health counselor: 2 years after undergrad ( pays ok) Mental health social worker( 2 years after undergrad pay ok, but I don't know how much it is needed out of the country, as it is tailored more for American case studies) Occupational therapist ( It is 2 years after undergrad and pay very well, and in high demand world wide) Psychologist( typically requires 4-5 years after undergrad but it doesn't pay too well maybe 60,000 a year but if it is a Ph.D program you will be called doctor with is a plus, and you can do research. Industrial organizational psychology ( 2 years after undergrad, and it pays really well , almost as much as a doctor, you would be working a business psychologist for companies. In addition, It isn't really uncommon to go to the USA to study an undergrad in psychology, I don't know you financial situation but university in America is expensive enough as it is, why go all this way for a degree that is not going to take you anywhere specific if you are not planning on graduate school. Well, if your planning to commit to more schooling a say go for it! If not, why don't you consider other majors, I am sure you have other interests. Economics is sort of like psychology and is a career in high demand Chemistry is also high pay and high demand like economics If you into maths, accounting is a good choice, so it finance,
