What are the best courses/education in the entertainment/media/online ("Hollywood") industry?
-
I am trying to find part-time education or online, or other (any kind, really) of course/classes/certification/vocational/degree program which would be the best in the industry of Entertainment/Media. Location -- Los Angeles. About me -- I am an IT professional with BS degree, certified in technical and management areas, building and developing Web consumer products for quite a well in different industries (Social Web, Jobs/Recruitment, Health), but I would like to expand my possibilities and get another vision of what is missed in so called "pop" culture. Love entertainment, and I want to get into it. Any advices? Suggestions? For now I am looking and UCLA Extension.

Answer:
Nothing beats the practicality of working in the industry, in any capacity, and simply learning by being in that environment. In fact, if you talk to most people who work in the business you'll find the majority have no formal training or a degree in film or television. If however you're looking for "credentials" of some kind to demonstrate your knowledge I would recommend you look at Master's programs at USC or UCLA. Both have outstanding programs in film-making (i.e. MFA programs). If you're interested in the business aspect of entertainment, I would look at Master's programs in communications (e.g. Annenberg at USC) or an MBA with an entertainment focus which I believe both Anderson (UCLA) and Marshall (USC) provide.

Check out the Carnegie Masters of Entertainment Management http://www.heinz.cmu.edu/school-of-public-policy-management/entertainment-industry-management-meim/index.aspx . The program is taught in Los Angeles by industry professionals. It teaches students to view intellectual property separately from any specific form of media and prepares graduates to work successfully across all entertainment platforms.

USC's Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism has a Master's in Communication Management program that you might also consider. A possible area of focus in the program is Entertainment Management: http://annenberg.usc.edu/Home/Prospective/Masters/CMGT/AreasofFocus/EntMgt.aspx Although I did not go through that particular program, I finished my http://Ph.D.at Annenberg. While I was there, I interacted with a number of students in the Comm. Management program and was a teaching assistant for a couple of their courses. A reasonable percentage of students in the Communication Management program are enrolled while they continue to work in various professions. It is doable because a lot of the classes are offered in the evening.

Experience is the best teacher. Get out and just do it! I graduated both the UCLA Professional Program in Producing (2003) and the UCLA Professional Program in Screenwriting (2007.) Both were fun and semi-enlightening. Interestingly, most of my classmates in the screenwriting program talked a lot about wanting to go on to get MFAs and teach, which struck me as odd: I just wanted to make movies. And so I am, and so most of them aren't, go figure... There's also USC and AFI (three of the four best filmmaking schools in the country are here in LA - the other would be NYU - feel free to howl in protest if you'd like...) as well as dozens of other college and college-level school-type-things here in LA county. There are also thousands of seminars with pontificating gurus each week in Los Angeles, most of whom are pretty much useless in my experience... that said, I can highly recommend (again, from personal experience) two independent resources that have been amazingly helpful to me: http://www.filmspecific.com by Stacey Parks; she knows her stuff when it comes to figuring out indie distribution, and she gives away a ton of free info to help you get started. http://www.suzannelyons.net/ Suzanne Lyons has become a personal mentor to me; I've used what she's taught me again and again in all aspects of moviemaking.
