Is Yellowstone a quiet place?

Where is the best place to stay near Yellowstone?

  • I'm interested in a wide variety of answers, but would be particularly interested if folks have suggestions for the following trip. I plan to drive to Yellowstone from Colorado for one week in mid June with my partner and my parents who are visiting from the UK. Ideally we'd find an inexpensive place in a natural setting with at least two seperate bedrooms and a kitchen where we can self-cater some of the time. Which towns/areas are best as a home base that can be reached from Denver metro by car in one day?

  • Answer:

I live in Jackson, WY.  From Denver, the most direct route to Yellowstone is probably through Jackson, to Grand Teton National Park and up to Yellowstone's south gate.  It is about 70 miles from Jackson to the south gate. Lodging within Yellowstone is extremely limited.  You can check on it using Xanterra's website (the primary concessionaire in Yellowstone). Lodging in the Jackson Hole area is easier.  Jackson Hole encompasses the entire valley, including the towns of Jackson, Wilson and Teton Village.  The bulk of hotel rooms will be in Jackson.  While Teton Village is primarily known for its ski area (Jackson Hole Mountain Resort), it has many good housing options.  Check JHMR's website for condo rentals.  From what you described, a condo may provide what you are seeking.  There is a back entrance into GTNP (Moose-Wilson Road) that saves you having to go back around through Jackson. The downside of staying in Jackson or Teton Village and daytripping to Yellowstone is drive time.  Although you will be going through spectacularly scenic areas, a normal "loop" through Yellowstone from Jackson takes about 10-12 hours, allowing for exploration in Yellowstone.

I think you will find that only the South and West Entrances to Yellowstone are drivable from Denver in one day. Jackson, WY has lots of accommodations but is the most pricey town near Yellowstone. Their chamber of commerce would be a place to start for recommendations. The town of West Yellowstone is farther from Denver but has more affordable motels and perhaps you'd find it to be a more natural setting. If you have about five days to stay in and around Yellowstone, I'd suggest you call the park concessionaire Xanterra (307-344-7311 or 866-439-7375) for two or three of your nights, since staying in the park is certainly the most pleasant, both for rustic settings and for convenience in getting to all the wonderful things to see in the area. I live in Cody, Wyoming which is about an 8 hour drive from Denver. We are 50 miles from the East Gate to Yellowstone. You could also drive to Jackson, Wyoming from Denver and enter the park through the South Gate. Research lodging in those two places and also in Livingston, MT as it takes you down into the North East Gate, Lamar valley - best place to see wildlife for sure.
