What are the must-see places in Philly if you just have one day?

What are good places to visit in San Francisco for a geeky tour of just one day?

  • So lets say you're visiting San Francisco in a work or even family-related trip and the inner geek in you wants to take one full day for visiting the many places that must be around there that are significant in computer history and in today's startup scene. - What would be a good list of these places? - How long should one stay in each of them? - In which order should they be visited? Thanks for answering, I'm sure quite a few people will benefit from the answers.

  • Answer:

Do you mean specifically the city of San Francisco, or the Bay Area as a whole? Most of the sites that are directly related to computer history are down in Silicon Valley, which is to the south. For a quick geeky diversion within the city, it's tough to beat the Musee Mechanique, http://www.museemechanique.org/ - I'd give it at least an hour and $5 worth of quarters, though you could easily spend much more there. There's also some pretty cool stuff up the street at the Long Now Foundation http://longnow.org/

I've been looking for an answer myself, and here's a few links I found: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_History_Museum and in the same line, visible for free, the Intel Musem: http://byteful.com/blog/2011/09/intel-museum-review-5-exhibits/ That review suggests that it can be "adequately visited" in one hour. The same blog also reports on visits to Apple's and Google's headquarters: http://byteful.com/blog/visit/free-cheap-things-to-do-in-san-francisco-area/
