How can I manually manage what status content I want to see in my Facebook news feed?

I subscribe to a lot of interesting Facebook pages (The Economist etc), but I find that Facebook doesn't show any of those news stories or updates in my News Feed in my browser. But they are available when I access Facebook through the iPhone app. What is Facebook doing here, and how can I override this default Facebook's news feed management "optimization".
