Where Can I Rent a Car in Toulouse, France?

Is it possible to rent a car in Spain and then drop it off in France or Italy?

  • I would love to do a driving tour of the Mediterranean Sea this summer.  I was thinking of starting in Barcelona, Spain, driving along the French Rivera, and then ending somewhere in Italy.  Are there any good rental car companies where I can pick up the car in Spain and then drop it off in France or Italy?  Or would it be easier or cheaper to buy a car in one country and sell it in another?

    A friend of mine wanted to do exactly the same and he spent some time researching the best way to do it: Buying/selling is not an option because of the legalities involved (ie the car needs to go thru a special government check + tax if not bought in the same country you sell it in) plus the hassle of finding a buyer in Italy. Most rental companies like Avis and Hertz will let you drop off in another country but the cost will be quite high. The cost of car rental in Spain is less than in France and much less than in Italy Before travel sites became aware that negative reviews hurt business, there was a great deal of complaints against Avis at the Barcelona Airport. It used to be that you could pay for your European trip by buying and selling your car, especially if you brought it home. It is no longer a viable option. I have done exactly what you describe and also done it by train. This is one of the few cases where driving is better than the train. The exact scam that was pulled at the Barcelona Airport was this: they would threaten to refuse your rental if you did not accept their insurance,and after you refused they would enter in the computer as if you did. It is important to keep the original of your paper contract. This happened to me, it was about $800 extra. Some American car companies will not allow you to drive in Italy. The rates of theft and accidents in Italy are much higher. If you rented in Italy and drove to Spain, the rental would cost at least twice as much.Renting in Venice, a mid-size cost me $100/day. Be sure they do not stick you with a diesel. Even in Europe it is harder to find.More importantly,it is life driving on the left in Britain,what if you have a pint and forget?It is extremely expensive if you just do what you are in the lifetime habit of doing,and grab the gas pump. I have started in Spain twice, and started in France about 20 times, the reason is that the drive up the Spanish coast from Barcelona is industrial and grim. Despite the above, the drive is priceless.

Yes, I flew into Girona and hired a car to drive into France. Do tell your car hire company that you will be visiting France and check the insurance cover includes France. If the drop-off point is different then you will pay extra.
