How is the life in Greece?

How's life in Greece right now (early 2012) for the average person?

  • With the economic malaise that has hit the Eurozone and especially Greece, what's it like to live in Greece right now? What has changed. Do you feel affected, if so, how?

  • Answer:

Apparently life goes on as it always did. If you don't watch the news, the differences are subtle. The immigrants suffer more than we natives do and it's in their neighbourhoods that you'll see the bigger change. Also industrial regions and big cities in the mainland are hit much worse than the tourist regions in the islands. So if you want to visit us this year you'll probably be surprised to find business-as-usual and prices as high as ever. Internally, everybody fights his/her own battle. To get used to a loss of income that seems permanent. To shut out the talking heads on TV who bring the bad news but bring no way out. To fend off depression. We are very social people over here so what you will mostly see is people trying to have fun as they always did and people complaining a lot when they get together. Complaining is our way to do group therapy perhaps. As for how I am personally affected, I 've written a bit about it before on Quora. I guess I'll become part of the brain drain soon.
