Is Verizon better than DirecTV?

How does DirecTV compare to Verizon FiOS TV?

  • I've been a long time Verizon FiOS customer for both their Internet and TV services. Lately I've noticed that the channel lineup for the TV package that I'm on doesn't include any better channels and wanted to try DirecTV since they have some better promotion going on. Anyone tried switching from FiOS TV to DirecTV and have any opinions/concerns?

  • Answer:

Our FIOS was NOT Verizon, but here is our story: We switched back to DirecTV (had it for a number of years before FIOS came to town), and we have been very satisfied with the "package" we chose. We went from "Choice" to "Xtra" and like the line-up, generally (I miss C-Span3).  Our FIOS company presented a great case when they convincced City Hall to build an office building for them, but as they have expanded elsewhere, they have contracted out technical service (housecalls) and have not kept up their end of the contract. Our picture kept freezing or "pixillating," and while our FIOS internet has remained pretty reliable, the television and phone part gave much trouble. When I called City Hall about the FIOS issues, they said they were no longer responsible for the service of the FIOS company.  At one time, the "city" REGULATED service that was contracted to the city, but once those regulations were removed (during the Reagan era), the problem is negotiated between the customer and the corporation -- ONE CUSTOMER vs the Corporation is not a very "negotiable" ratio. Our DirecTV service has been very good and customer service is very helpful.  Yes, severe clouds or stacked up snow can affect the reception, but satellite dishes can generally be placed so that is not a frequent problem. Our neighbor has his satellite dish positioned low enough that he can reach it without climbing up to the roof. We especially enjoy FreeSpeechTV channel and LinkTV which are publicly funded and are not offered via FIOS connections.

I can't compare the two because I've never had Verizon. But when you're looking at the DTV offers make sure you also look into what the cost will be after all those introductory credits are over, which is usually after the first year. And your service agreement is for two years and there's cancellation fees and non-return fees on your equipment if you don't send it back if you disconnect. I work for one of their call centers and I do think the service you get is great, but these are some of the biggest complaints I get from customers.
