How to start learning Java?

How can I start learning Java Struts/Spring web development?

  • I know core java. I don't know HTML, JavaScript, JQuery, AJAX, CSS, XML and JSP. I am working on Java Struts as well as Spring projects. I have no idea from where to start with. 1) Should I start learning HTML, JSP, JavaScript and then move on to Spring/Struts framework or should I do the other way? 2) What is the best resource for the way you suggest?

  • Answer:

Before starting with any particular Framework, it would be good to have very basic knowledge off HTML, JavaScript and JSP. You won't need to go into more details of these technologies, because you can learn more and more about these, as you start working on those. Once you are done with that, you can get books to start with the frameworks. I would recommend books over any online tutorials, as books help you understand not only the syntax but also general recommendations. For Spring, Spring in Action is a very nice book to start with, which covers a lot of other related technologies as well. But you can read only the things which you may use. All the best!

I'm not sure if I'd bother with Struts. It's a framework that is at the end of its life. HTML/CSS/Javascript are great skills to have. Makes you very diverse. For learning Spring (Shameless plug)- keep an eye on my site springframework.guru.  I'm building this site to teach people with core Java skills the Spring Framework.

You need to have a basic knowledge of HTML, Jsp & Servlets. Struts framework, nowadays, Struts 2.0 is widely used alongwith Jsp and Servlets. The best resource for Struts 2.0/Hibernate/Spring is Mkyong.
