Computer science degree questions.

What types of questions are asked in an interview at IIT Guwahati for an MTech and PhD dual degree in the computer science department?

  • Answer:

Interview for M.Tech. + Ph.D. dual degree in CSE at IIT Guwahati.I am a current student pursuing dual degree in CSE at IIT Guwhati. I will tell you about my interview experience.Interview panel will consists of 5-6 faculty members of the department. At first, they will ask for your intro, and about your past history such as B.Tech college, year or post-B.Tech job related questions. Then the interview starts actually.Initially, interviewers will ask you for your favorite subjects related to Computer Science. Since you are from non-CS background, you don't know much about Computer Science, so what ever you have studied in your B.E./B.Tech. related to CS, just prepare for those subjects. For example, EE/EC background people can say Digital Design as their favorites. Typical interdisciplinary subjects such as Engineering Mathematics, Linear Algebra, Probability & Statistics, Numerical Methods etc can be said as your favorite subjects.Since I am from EC background, I told Digital Design, Data structure (as I have studied this subject during my B.Tech.) , Programming and OOP as my favorite subjects. So then they started questioning from multiplexer related questions from digital design, to which I answered almost all correctly. After that, I was asked some questions from OOP inheritances, which I couldn't answer correctly. Then again question from digital design, this time regarding Carry-Look-Ahead adders. To which I answered correctly. Then they asked me a puzzle and some questions related to that.puzzle was:-You have given 10 jars and 1000 chocolates. Distribute these 1000 chocolates in these 10 jars in such a way such that, if you need 'k' number of chocolates from those 1000 chocolates, you can just take some 'n' number of  jars from those 10 jars, to fullfil your required number of 'k' chocolates.I took some time , then I answered it correctly. At last, they asked, why do you want to pursue dual degree in Computer Science being a non-CS graduate?Try to answer it in a convincing manner. Don't say that you like programming so you want to pursue dual degree in CSE, because Computer Science doesn't mean only programming, but CS has a lot other things.Selection is based upon considering all factors such as B.E./B.Tech. marks + GATE score + written test result + Interview + other backgrounds. So my suggestion would be, prepare for basic subjects related to Computer Science and Mathematics. You can also consider digital design, computer architecture, operating systems, computer networks etc, only if you have done those subjects in your B.Tech. or if you have a nice grip on those subjects.PS: Going Anon for some personal reason.
