How to access the Twitter Streaming API from Python?

Will Twitter continue to allow twitter "monitoring" services? They've already shut down a few.

  • They seem to be shutting down a lot of companies that are using Twitter streaming to provide various analytics? e.g. they shut down 140kit. It seems like products like Argyle Social, Unilyzer, CrowdBooster will have their API access shut down soon or as soon as they get a bit bigger. Will Twitter continue with this pattern of shutting down "competitors"?

  • Answer:

It really depends on what the service is doing. Dick Costelo, Twitter's CEO, has explicitly said that they are in favour of value-add services, including monitoring service Radian6. If you provide additional tools and value to businesses or users then you're unlikely to be shutdown. If you are merely providing another consumer entrance to Twitter, then expect to be in their sights.

I think that Twitter is starting to think: Revenue... and they can either shutdown all of these twitter monitoring services and develop their own which users can access for a couple of dollars a month, or they may tie up with a few third party sites.  In the end, it's not only about value-added services, but it's all about how much tweeple will spend on monitoring the twitterverse.
