What is it like to have a web design job?

What are some ideal methods for presenting web design at job interviews?

  • This is a follow-up question to .  Ok, so web design is not made for print. But I come from a design culture where people want to turn pages and hold things in their hands.  I'm pressed for time and I'm wondering if I'm committing some sort of a faux pas if I present my work (online work and concept work) in a pdf on my 13 in. laptop.  Any advice?

  • Answer:

The iPad has been an excellent way of letting people get their hands on our work. It provides a very intuitive and free experience. For larger groups I agree a beamer does the trick. But I would recommend to never print webdesign.

Go to kinkos and print out your best designs on larger paper. Buy some kind of photo album book to contain all the prints. Bring a USB drive with a PDF of all your work, screen shots and links to the work. Also, if you want to get crazy, you can add comments to the screenshots/PDF. (obviously offer them the USB drive) Online portfolio, bring your computer but let them know it might be better on a larger screen. The reality is this: they'll look through your printed version and if they like what they see they'll ask to see the sites on a computer. At the end, tell them you've prepared the USB drive with all your work, links and comments and they can keep it. Trust me, once you leave, they'll be taking another look through your work if they like you.

Websites reside in the screen so the most accurate representation would be in the browser in front of whoever is viewing. I don't recommend anything other than that unless you are presenting to many people in which case you should use projection. make sure people look at it at actual "lean forward" distance.

Additionally to the above, if you want to impress your client, I think a "walk-through" on a projector usually works well.
