Is psychology a good career to get into currently?

I will get a PhD in cognitive psychology. I also have a master's in physics. What career paths exist other than the usual post doc to tenure track path?

  • I have good working knowledge of Bayesian methods, elementary knowledge of neural networks, and am generally good at math. My programming skills aren't the best but I can code (i.e., get things done) in Matlab, Python and R. I have a couple of first author publications in peer reviewed journals. FYI, I am an international student in the US.

  • Answer:

I can see you possibly getting some really kickass job with the FBI or CIA. Edit: Ahh, your FYI edit changes things a little.  However, depending on your country of origin and whether or not you 'hate' the United States out of tradition, the CIA and NSA may find you of value - ....... or not. ;) LOL!

The usual path you refer to is pretty unusual these days, if you include the intended destination. HS teacher is one option, and may pay better than postdoc without nearly as many hours. There are industry jobs, but you need to find people who either need your specific skills and experience, or hire accomplished talent with a good education.
