Our neighborhood is not wired for . Everyone gets their TV through satellite dishes. We want to get a cable company to wire the neighborhood so that we can get an option for TV and internet service. How do we go about doing it?

Answer:
Cable companies thrive on expansion. Maintenance is just not enough. The greater the footprint of their service, the greater the customer base, houses passed, potential for income. Unfortunately, in the case of existing neighborhoods, the costs associated with providing that service is much higher than in new construction subdivisions. This is not to say that 'retrofitting' a neighborhood cannot and does not happen, but it is rare. The approval process is generally as follows, and it's quite simple. When an area is proposed for expansion, two assessments are made to determine cost effectiveness. One, of course is the cost of installation. This depends on the areas size, density, and distance from existing cable signal. Two, is an assessment of interest. What amount of revenue can be expected from the expansion? So, the more interest in the neighborhood for the product, the greater the likelihood of approval. Yet even if it is, permits are not only required by the municipal gov't, but the federal as well. So desire may be there, but not permission. If you are interested in starting the process, a submission to your cable company expressing neighborhood interest is a good place to start. Names and addresses would do, like a petition, I guess. If it doesn't happen, it's because the planning department doesn't see the expansion as profitable, or at least, not profitable enough, or permits cannot be attained.

If the density of homes in your general neighborhood is below about 15 per mile, most cable franchises won't require the local operator to build due to the poor return on that investment. However, if you are motivated to get service, it may help your case to drum up support from enough of your neighbors willing to commit, in writing, to get the service, too. Cable operators like to go for the low-hanging fruit, so a neighborhood full of pre-sold prospects are attractive and might sway them to build out to your home.
