What is Google advertising?

With the Motorola Droid, what percentage of the advertising is paid for by Google?

  • Their ad campaign for Droid has heavy mention of the Android OS and Google has branding on it. Does Google pay a percentage for this ad campaign? If so, what percent?

  • Answer:

I assume you know Google own Motorola, which makes things simpler in this case.   Traditionally, the device manufacturer and the carrier (Verizon) run their own independent campaigns paid from their own budgets.   When the Motorola Q launched, there was an issue of Forbes magazine that had three ads: one paid for by Motorola, one paid for by Microsoft and  one from Verizon/   Carrier advertising budgets are an order of magnitude larger than what a traditional device manufacturer spends. AT&T spends over a billion dollars in advertising per year, while a device manufacturer would spend tens of millions in ads, depending on the device.   In Q1, AT&T was the second largest advertiser with $463 million in the quarter (source: http://www.strata-gee.com/2013/06/19/top-advertiser-trends-in-q1-2013/ )   However, device manufacturers also fund the carrier marketing efforts with tools like MDFs (market development funds) that the carrier may apply towards advertising.   In the end, every phone is different in terms of expectations and priorities, and the balance of how important it is for the carrier versus how important it is for the ODM might determine the percentage paid.
