Is New Jersey fun?

What is the most fun thing to do in New Jersey? Apart from going to New York.

  • Answer:

Point Pleasant is much more family friendly than more 'Shore' places like Seaside Heights. If you go, check out Hoffman's Ice Cream for delicious, produced in-house ice cream :) A bit farther north of the shore, around the fall, check out Delicious Orchards.  Raspberry picking is pretty cool, especially following the 1:1 ratio of mouth:basket. Mmmm... pies, as well. Seriously, there's a line of pies, right near the entrance. Be sure to check out the rest of the place, too.  Otherwise, mmm... pies will steal your soul. For more late night wanderings: Check out sunrise at shore at 6 am, though about 2/3 of the time it gets cloudy as the sun heats up the ocean water. Moonrise is also gorgeous, if the moon is gonna rise out of the ocean after dark. Atlantic Highlands is another place I often went to to watch boats drift in and out of the bay at like 2-4 am during my more 'rebellious' phases of high school :-D The Inkwell Coffee is tasty, and be sure to try their Dutch Coffee. If your heart tells you that it feels like it's pumping toothpaste afterwards, that's just your body telling you it's proud of you! They used to be like 8 pm-6 am hours, but I think they went hipster and close at like 3 am now or something. I miss NJ now...

I would recommend: Red Bank - A lot of small restaurants, bars, shops, etc. A very nice and relaxing place to hang out. The Atlantic Highlands/Sandy Hook - Great views of NYC, some nice hiking trails,a few lighthouses and a very relaxed attitude. Delaware Gap - Nice rugged area great for hiking and camping, etc. Makes you forget that you are in New Jersey...LOL The Delaware River area - Anywhere from just south of Phillipsburg to just north of Trenton. Very nice drive along the river and a some quaint towns to stop in such as Lambertville. Sussex County - This is the "nicest" area of New Jersey, IMO. Very rural and hilly. Lots of small towns to visit and a lot of natural beauty.

Lots of great answers I won't repeat. How about going to see the Jets or Giants play? It's way overpriced, but the crowds can be very enthusiastic without being obnoxious. The Meadowlands is a fantastic stadium and there are a lot of good, though overpriced, food options.  If you can take public transit, better even because parking is overpriced and the crowd you ride with is a lot of fun.

One of the secrets of NJ is that there is something for everyone here - we would just prefer to not share it around. My #1 favorite thing to do is the thing everyone disparages with an eyeroll and a shrug: Go to Seaside Heights. I love Seaside. It's grungy and weird, and has as many piercing places as it has T-shirt shops. You can get fried Kool-Aid and Nutter Butters (the latter of which is actually pretty good.) The rides are fun and colorful, the games are a perfect way to throw your money away. If you like baking in the sun, go early, get a nice spot on the beach. It's a small beach, because the Atlantic eats the land all year long, (And the Atlantic is not the Pacific, or the Gulf of Mexico - it wants to eat you too. Watch for riptides.) For lunch, grab a sausage, pepper and onion sandwich from Three Brothers. Get a twist ice cream  from Kohr's (or Original Kohr's, depending on who you like better.) Go back to the beach, and when you're fried nicely, pack your stuff up and enjoy the sunset, as you stroll up and down a slightly surreal boardwalk. Think of it as an acid trip. I love Seaside. On Wednesday nights they have free fireworks during the summer. Enjoy.

New Jersey holds a real special place in my heart. I am a South African who spent close to 2 years there between 2008 and 2010. I worked at Six Flags most of my time there... Six Flags has its annual Frighfest from the beginning of October - The whole park goes Halloween themed for the whole month before it closes for the season. Well worth the visit, especially at night. Point Pleasant is also an awesome spot to visit...there are some awesome pubs in the area. Redbank, a little further north, is a great spot to walk around in, especially if you love window shopping. Jay and Silent Bob's (Of Dogma fame) secret stash is a nice visit if you love comic books and movie memorabilia. Also some nice pubs in Redbank... Wildwood is awesome...some of the best beaches in NJ, and the boardwalk is full of entertainment. Cape May, just around the corner, is beautiful as well from what I hear. LBI (Long Beach Island), although I've never been there, has always been held in high regard by friends of mine, who always wanted to take me there, but never had the chance. NJ also has some great Pizzerias where cheese steaks and traditional pizza are always a great taste extravaganza. Bruno's in Belmar comes to mind, as does Nick's in Brick Township. Ocean Grove is a great place to visit if you like classic architecture. Nice beach walking there as well... Sledding during the winter is also a lot of fun (If there is enough snow). Holmdel Park comes to mind...Biiiiiig hill there :D All of the above replies also hold some great ideas...Just bear in mind that a lot of what Jersey has is seasonal ie. Summer, but its a great place, and I miss it dearly. The people are awesome there, and I will be back soon hopefully. There are plenty other things to do in NJ...Get to know the locals, and they'll show you :) I experienced everything from hanging out with firemen at their stations, to running with wolves (Yes wolves) at a sanctuary close to Six Flags. Hope this helps... 732 forever...

Although I haven't lived in NJ in 22 years, I did grow up there and these are my fond memories of NJ. Although, I have to add that the population has probably tripled so it's definitely not nearly as peaceful or rural as it once was. Big box stores and enormous condo complexes have wiped out large tracts of land and have completely over run the state. • Long Beach Island - once quiet and peaceful family beach front, • Princeton, great town to visit for the day • Lambertville (and New hope across the river in PA) • Doris Duke State Park • Johnson's Park near New Brunswick • Atlantic Highlands and Sandy Hook • Cape May with it's cute victorian cottages • Atlantic City • The historic town of Smithville are just a few of many places to visit....enjoy

Its a matter of what you consider to be fun. All I can tell you is what I do for fun and let you decide if it would be fun for you. First and foremost is hiking. NJ has over a thousand miles of hiking trails, some rugged and quite beautiful. I prefer the Highlands region with its rocky and steep trails and excellent viewpoints. Next is fishing. NJ has beautiful trout streams, rivers with monster pike and numerous lakes filled with many varities of fish. And speaking of rivers and lakes I enjoy paddlesports like kayaking and canoeing. I like to eat out and NJ has many fine restaurants and I enjoy going to concerts and NJ has many music venues ranging from intimate clubs to huge arenas. While on the subject of arenas, I enjoy attending soccer, hockey, basketball and minor league baseball games. I enjoy visiting historic sites and NJ is loaded with them. Picnics in parks, geocaching, bicycling, sailing, crabbing, skiing are other things I do for fun in NJ.

New Jersey is full of fun things to do! Going to NYC is definitely not where it ends in Jersey. If you live there, of course you're going to have to find more to do than go to the city every weekend. It offers many of the "fun" things that other states offer like parks, trails, amusement parks, etc. Other fun things to do in Jersey are taking a trip to Atlantic City, going to the beach, and hanging out in Long Beach Island. Jersey has a lot to offer!

Six Flags Wildwood Cape May the rest of the Jersey Shore if you think that sounds 'fun'
