With the advent of realtime information across the web should we expect "image" search engines to return more fresh content?
-
You search for "justin bieber" or "blackberry" or "audi" or "super bowl", image search engines show images published years ago. There are many fresh image content available on the web for these popular queries and most likely people expect to see those images. What are your thoughts?

Answer:
Here's a good overview of the important ingredients to Google Search which applies not just to text results, but to images and video too: http://www.google.com/corporate/tech.html Freshness has long been a vital component to getting search right, the basic concept has not changed with the advent of realtime information but the "Updates with Images" tool on http://google.com allows the user to drill down onĀ this particular dimension. I don't see why not. I heard a story on NPR how Google may experiment with "Living Stories" allowing users to easily submit videos (and one would assume images) directly to a particular story. So, let's say you're a news site and you wrote a story about Cairo. People could submit videos, through YouTube, directly to your editorial staff for approval and instant inclusion with your story. It would be reasonable to suggest that Google display those "trending" videos (and likely images) more prominently in their search results. This is just one possibility. Unless people just aren't using the "image" section of the search engines to search for trending topic (which is entirely possible), then I don't see why they couldn't do some sorting based on timeliness.
