Does the Macbook Pro play Blu-ray DVDs?

    No.  Apple are getting rid of optical drives, and have never directly supported the BluRay standard.  It may be possible to attach an external BluRay drive and you will need special software to act as a player.

Yes. You do need an external Blu-ray drive, and to get or buy an app that has licensed the Blu-ray technology though, as Apple did not licence it. But just the thought of having to standup to put a piece of physical thing somewhere, and then pass the whole movie hearing something mechanical spinning and whining the whole time, no thank you. Besides, as in most Europe it is legal to do private copies (albeit by paying a ridiculous tax), but not legal to circumvent DRM, I'd be forced to see the movie on a dedicated Blu-ray player, or to use a Mac (the mini) connected to the TV, with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, or a remote connection from the laptop. No thank you, I'd rather press play on the Apple TV and get my media in binary format, iTunes or otherwise (always legal stuff, of course). So can you play? Yes. Should you? No.

Apple's own "solution" of streaming/downloading movies from iTunes is NOT really better, at least for people who value the quality of video/audio. I use both the latest model of AppleTV and the original Mac Blu-ray Player and I still prefer to buy BluRay disks for movies (for TV series the visual/audio quality of iTunes content is acceptable enough). http://www.macblurayplayer.com/features.htm

No, Macbook Pro alone can't play Blu-ray DVDs, you need some help. A Mac blu-ray player and an external blu-ray drive. You can use LG blu-ray drive and Macgo Mac blu-ray Player.
