How did you get started in Graphic design?

In general, what is the best way to get started in both web and graphic design?

  • No recent experience other than messing around with HTML/CSS and making random icons/pictures in Illustrator/Photoshop. (I'm leaning more towards graphic design than web design, but I really enjoy both).

  • Answer:

Follow Blogs! Some great examples: http://nettuts.com/ http://smashingmagazine.com/ http://sixrevisions.com/ http://www.noupe.com/ So, one small issue may come from the fact that you are only now looking at the blogs. However, if you wouldn't mind searching, there are lots of beginner tutorials, and are excellent resources all design/business.

Go spend a few hours at your local bookstore or library. The graphic design resources there are different than what you would find online. There are usually great books about design methodologies that will really help strengthen your eye. Also start noticing type, color, and sites that you do or don't like. It's important to start looking at everything and learn the rules of design, so later you know when to break them.

My opinion would be to give yourself a small project, and if you're more comfortable as a print designer then it could be based off a previous project of yours. For example, take a poster you've designed and trying makingĀ  a website out of it. If it's the technology that you're concerned about, there are lots of tutorials, I'd recommend http://lynda.com. there are a handful of free tuts there.
