What are some good Midwest colleges for computer science?

  • I live in Minnesota and I plan on staying somewhere in the midwest region. I am taking a computer science class this year and I really enjoy it. I know there isn't going to be any Stanford here for computer science but I figure there are some good options.

  • Answer:

Carnegie Mellon and UIUC are definitely on top. UW Madison, Northwestern University, UMichigan, Ohio State, and Case Western Reserve also have great programs. But UIUC has somehow produced a disproportionate amount of silicon valley millionaires.

Midwest is a large region. For schools that have had alums that have produced some cool companies, I know of, I included that. But: Carnegie-Mellon (Delicious, The Smiley Emoticon), Michigan (Google), University of Illinois - Urbana Champaign (PayPal, The Browser), Ohio State (Daily Booth), Penn State (Weebly), Northwestern (Groupon), Case Western (Craigslist, The Art Of Computer Programming). Wisonsin (Madison) is up there too. All top schools. But this topic is still about, "it's not where you go, it's what you do at where you go." Good luck! [edit] One more thing, since I saw you mentioned Stanford in your question. Keep in mind that a lot of the notable Stanford/MIT guys we think of actually completed their undergraduate degrees outside of Stanford. Larry Page is from Michigan, Sergey Brin is from Maryland - College Park, Don Knuth himself is from Ohio (Case Western).
