Why does a dry throat feel dry?
-
I developed a spot in the back of my throat which has been feeling drier and drier throughout the day, which made me wonder: is there actually an area of the throat which is dry? If not, what is happening physiologically when people experience a dry throat because of a cold or allergies?
-
Answer:
There is no area of the throat that is actually dry. The saliva from our mouth constantly moistens our throat once we swallow it. Also the lining of the throat is liked by cells which secrete mucus which keeps it smooth. The dry throat due to cold and allergies are mainly due to impairment in effective salivation and inflammation of the palate along with the pharynx. This inflammation decreased the normal functions of the cells. A sore throat may be associated.
