How do I get a job at Intel?
-
I am B.Tech in Electronics and Communication with 3.364 GPA, currently working at an IT company and very much interested in VLSI and hardware design. I want to know if I can get a job at Intel and how? Is masters a preference?

Answer:
yes, masters is certainly a preference. Your B.tech degree wont be sufficient to get placed in a company like Intel. Nevertheless if you are really interested then these might help you to gain knowledge in the field of VLSI You must have through knowledge in electronics devices and circuit theory. Visit sites like edaboard and http://https//www.coursera.org/ Register and be a member of IEEE, go through the journals, thereby you can gain knowledge on various technological aspects. Profound knowledge on integration of CMOS is absolutely necessary. Concepts on FPGA and ASIC design are also important. Work on techniques for reducing the chip size and power dissipation of a particular device. Try to learn verilog,VHDL

I would agree with the anonymous poster that if Intel recruits at your campus, you have a great shot. It helps to know alumni of your university. While things might have shifted significantly over the past 20 years, I found Intel to be a highly sociable engineering environment. Your technical and interpersonal skills will be highly valued so get them both up to snuff :)

Others have covered the optimal background/resume. For large companies, the best method is to impress someone within the company and have them send your resume to teams that would be a good fit. Intel sends recruiters to top colleges and gathers resumes. Often the employee attending the job fair will cherry pick some of the best resumes for his/her group. All the resumes get added to the job system and after that it's pure luck to have your resume routed to a team that's a good fit. Your best bet is to befriend someone within Intel and have them forward your resume to an appropriate hiring manager (bypassing all the layers of HR).

I was hired at intel last summer for a software engineering role. I was interviewed at and hired from an offsite location with less than 500 employees. I suspect it may be easier to get in the door at a location outside of the traditional tech centers. There's a ton of competition in places like silicon valley and Seattle. Get hired elsewhere and you still get the same pay, benefits, and ability to transfer in the company later. I also had a friend working in the location I was hired at so the internal reference helped a lot.

Well, it depends on your background. I'm a veteran, and I was interviewed by Intel twice. I felt that I was a good fit for them both times, but in the end they decided that I was not. I did not have a Masters degree, only my experience in the Navy for 8 years and a BS in Criminal Justice. Many other interviewees were similar. Intel hired a bunch of them, but also did not hire a bunch of us. I think it was around 60 percent hired. So, yes, depending on your background it can be tough. Tech jobs is probably easier to get into if you don't have a Masters. Experience in tech related fields will help, especially if you know electrical theory. Otherwise, good luck! :D It's a really great company to work for if you get into it, and you can even get placed internationally I believe.
