What Is The Minecraft?

What is really driving the Minecraft founder insane? What drove him out of Minecraft?

  • http://www.pcworld.com/article/2683175/heres-markus-notch-perssons-farewell-letter-to-minecraft-fans.html After selling out to Microsoft and leaving Minecraft, he ended his farewell letter with "It’s not about the money. It’s about my sanity". But what is really driving him insane? He has lots of fans. Lots of money now. Lots of genuine respect from his fans. He is better off than the top 0.01% of the world's richest because he has earned great respect despite earning big $$$.

  • Answer:

Nothing is really driving Notch "insane".  He's just become something that he has no interest in being, and would rather not continue being what the Internet wants him to be. Notch never wanted to make something like Minecraft.  He never wanted to be the head of a corporation.  He never wanted to be a figurehead, held responsible for things that other people did on the company's behalf. He just wanted to make a game that he thought was interesting.  And if people liked it, that was a bonus. There's a dark side to that kind of fame - people feel entitled, people feel like they can criticize people and not the company, people feel like they're personally vested in something that no one person controls anymore. And he's done with that.  And for that, he has my lifelong respect.

He wasn't driven insane.  He never wanted to run a big company -- he just wants to develop games. Here is his "good-bye" letter in which he explains his departure: http://www.theverge.com/2014/9/15/6151941/minecraft-mojang-notch-goodbye-letter

He didn't want anyone looking up to him as if he was a god, much less over a million people. Having that much people depending on you is quite hard on your sanity; and Notch never even dreamed of being this high up
