Does Zoloft affect memory?

What are the effects of depression on memory and how does depression affect one's memory?

  • I used to have an impeccable memory, even though I took a little time to recollect somethings I eventually used to remember them. But, at one point in my life I went into depression, it was the first and last time I ever been so bad for so long, almost 2-2.5 years. I eventually came back to normal but I feel like I lost most my memories or in other words my ability to recollect stuff at my will. At times I try so hard to recollect, I can manage to get fragments of it, like if I wanted to know answer to a question, for example "Who discovered the electron and when? " The pre-depression me would come up with the answer almost as soon as the question is asked or at least a couple of seconds later, but now, I can remember various details like cathode ray experiment, etc but not the name of the person and year. I"m just trying to give you an example of what it is like for me. I really want to know if that depression phase of my life had any impact on it, it's been bothering me even since that thought came to my mind. Thanks.

  • Answer:

things learnt during that phase may not be embedded into your memory. so don stress. later learning should not present a problem unless you're still battling depression/anxiety/stress... if it's severe enough in itself to cause you stress, seek help. consult a professional.
