Is Computer science a good degree?

I will finish my MS degree quickly with a GPA of 4.4/5. Would it be good to apply for an MSc degree now in the US, hoping to get into a good college in computer science?

  • I am a computer science master's student in Europe who couldn't get into top US universities with an EE background and low GPA. I don't want Phd. And now am ready to apply to middle tier unis too which I didnt last time. I already have a good amount of experience with data engineering technologies and am a proficient software developer with excellent coding skills. Just that, I feel US has more research oriented jobs which are difficult to find here. P.S. My GPA is on absolute scale, as am one of the top three students.

  • Answer:

I wouldn't repeat the degree in the US. If you have no desire for a Ph.D., you might find admission difficult at top schools. They want Ph.D. candidates, and the Master's is a distraction from their focus. I'm not able to judge the relevance of your GPA. Graduate students usually have high GPAs, so yours -- in the US -- might be just average. I suspect the admissions officer might want to see your undergraduate scores, too. If your skills are good, it might make more sense to look for work in the US. We have tens of thousands with computer skills and H1B visa to allow work in the US. There are about 65,000 H1B visas granted each year.

If you're getting an MS degree already, why go for an MSc degree again? Especially if you are not interested in a PhD? Start looking for jobs already!
