What are the careers in marketing?

What would I need to do to change careers from marketing to human factor psychology?

  • I started my career in IT and did some programming but didn't like it. In the late 1990s I switched to marketing and had some experiences working with usability studies/research and liked it. What would I need to study to make that career change? My undergraduate grades were pretty bad so if I have to get another Bachelor's Degree, that might be okay. Unfortunately I am in a situation where I can't leave my current area very easily (recovering from cancer and need regular CTs, doctor visits, etc) so I don't know what to do and where to go. I live in the SF Bay Area. Thanks!

It may be helpful to take and learn from online courses first. When you spend more time on it, I think you'll find it is basically an experience and talent based career, by which I mean only learning from courses and finishing some practices cannot guarantee entry to this career. And an entry position of UX in the Valley probably is paid less than programming, and than your current marketing position. Since you are recovering from cancer (hope you get well soon) and may need rest rather than drastic changes in life, I suggest you stay at current position and gradually learn more about UX/UED in spare time.
