How to improve tonal perception?

Why am I so bad at colouring and shading? How can I improve my perception of colours and shading?

  • I think I have a very good attention for outlines and I am able to draw pretty well from imagination and from memory of scenes. However, I have no recollection of any detail about the colours, highlights, shadows whatsoever, even though the objects I imagine in my mind have colours and lighting effects. I find it very difficult to recall and recreate convincing "life" colours after drawing the outlines, but I don't know why. How can I improve?

  • Answer:

Maybe this tutorial can help :) it s about general color and light comprehension, and you can apply it to photography, drawing etc ... http://www.itchy-animation.co.uk/light.htm I ve started learning light in 3d software (cause most of the part was done by the software (in a early stage))  then try to apply what i ve learned  on 2d sketch :)

If you want to recreate what you saw either take a photo or do a thumbnail sketch. It is virtually impossible for you to remember otherwise.
