How would life be without thermal energy?

According to different beliefs like atheistic, religious, and other philosophies, how did life energy come to be?

  • There is a difference between living and non- living objects and this is believed to be that of life- force or life- energy. If energy can never be created or destroyed, then how did energy come to existence in the first place? How did life energy of living particles form and what will happen when it goes away? How is the living energy multiplied in the 7 billion people of the world and what will happen to all this life energy when there's a holocaust or all life is over?

  • Answer:

Atheism has no belief regarding this as atheism is defined only by lack of belief. For me personally, such a question is secondary to more important moral and ethical questions.

All I can tell is the Creationist theory according to religion and the Evolution theory according to science.

There is no difference between a living and a non-living thing. We are after all just a bunch of atoms. But the difference is the complexity contained in it and the consequences it leads to. Consider an empty room. The initial state of the room is given. After a period of time, its state can be predicted to a high degree of accuracy. But if there is a person inside the room, it becomes almost negligible. Note that if there is a super natural being who can observe the present state of the whole universe (into the electrons, protons etc. everything) without disturbing it and knows all the laws will determine its state accurately. This super natural being will see no difference between a living and a non-living thing. But of course such a thing is of no interest to us. Living organisms evolved over billion of years from organic molecules (macromolecules). It gained so much complexity in process that we have consciousness, free will etc. These are illusions but very much real for us. So, don't confuse this complexity with life energy, there is no such thing. I think you can find HOW this complexity built since the formation of our earth giving rise to living organisms, billions of people and so on. If there is an holocaust, this complexity is lost. Our Earth becomes in a way, Simple. Will it become complex again, in which form, at what rate etc. will only be determined by the state and the complexity its left with (and of course various other factors beyond our comprehension). If you ask WHY this complexity built, is not entertained among Scientists and by me.

Scientifically speaking there is no such thing as life-energy. You make a statement: 'There is a difference between living and non- living objects and this is believed to be that of life- force or life- energy.' And then invite us to explain it though we might not agree with the statement in the first place. Life has defining characteristics, and none of them is life-energy. List can be found here @http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life. So, since your question aims to debate a concept that has no meaning I deem it to be pointless.

Life Energy came to be when someone without much comprehension of biology or any other science decided that life (that doesn't even have a proper definition) was just too magical to use regular energy and needed a special energy that was unimaginatively but descriptively called Life Energy. At the moment of writing this response, the concept seems to be gaining no traction among Quora respondents to this question. Does a virus use Life Energy or Regular Energy. What about a sugar molecule or a lipid bilayer?
