What is cellular data on iphone 3gs?

Will AT&T automatically add a data plan to my account if I put my SIM card in an iPhone 3GS?

  • I currently use a flip phone without a data plan, but I'd like to use an iPhone I bought instead. I don't want the 3G data plan though, I'd just like to use it with WiFi and skip the extra charge if it's possible. I've heard that they can detect if you're using an iPhone and will tack the data plan on no matter what. Is this true?

  • Answer:

I don't know how they'll actually handle it, but AT&T is adamant that every iPhone must have a data plan.

Using a smart phone by going through a WiFi connection will not charge you for data on your at&t bill. They will not automatically add a data "plan", they will however charge you for single units of data used. You need to call customer service to set up a data plan that fits your needs and won't make you broke. If you use data without WiFi or a data plan on your account, it can get VERY pricey! I say this from personal experience, speaking to AT&T reps for over an hour and general frustration. If you have a smart phone, ANY smart phone, especially an iPhone, HTC or many other Android phones, if you add a sim card to that phone within a few days AT&T will add what they call a "reasonable" data plan to that line. You can get it removed but it will be prorated for the time you had the phone in. AT&T is in the business to make money, so don't think they'll be nice and just not give you web access, most smartphones don't function like this anyway.
