What digital camcorder has good low-light performance?

How can I find a lowlight monochrome image sensor with large pixel pitch?

  • I'm looking to build a monochrome camera with awesome lowlight performance. The sensor should have large pixel pitch (larger than 5um) and 2 or more mega pixels. Price in bulk should be less than $50. Square format would be a bonus. Does such a beast exist?

  • Answer:

Sensors are monochrome, in fact. In order to produce colour images, a Bayer filter (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayer_filter) is used in front of the sensor. Many DSLR cameras have pixel pitches larger than 5 micrometers and a lot more than 2M pixels. Just check the specs. So the beast you're asking about is a pretty common occurrence and recent models do have great low light performance. I cannot comment on the bulk price; there are fewer sensor manufacturers than camera makers (for instance, Canon makes their own, Nikon uses sensors built by Sony)

Other answers

The issue seems still up-to-date so I'd like to pose the question in a slightly different way: Which monochrome (no bayer filter) cmos sensors are available for purchase in manageable quantities in resonable price range? As well, what sensor interface / head boards are there? This rules out certain products by default. Applications for lower-end sensors are in the manifold, though.
