How do I get into reading a book and what are some good books?

I'm not interested in reading books, but I do realise that books are the repository of knowledge. When I make my mind to read a book I get bored and intend to stop it half-way. Why does this happen?

  • Answer:

It is just because you are not interested in reading books. Reading is a habit, and like any other habit it can be nurtured, and like any other habit, not every people do it. For a change you can try to get hold of some audio books, which might interest you. You can also gain knowledge by seeing educational channels like Discovery and National Geographic.

Hey books are one medium of knowledge ( and since you have mentioned knowledge i am excluding all non-fiction ) and as long as you get a hang of what the book is trying to communicate it is fine. for example Blink, Fooled by Randomness, Tipping point these books i have read half way got a fair idea of what the authors point is and moved on.  At times I read reviews online to get multiple perspective on these half read books and leave it at that. So chill leaving a knowledgeable book half way may not be all that bad.  To  enjoy reading find a genre you enjoy irrespective of  weather it is knowledgeable or not ;like thriller where the last page holds all the answers am sure you will have to complete that.

You do mention you are not interested in reading. Or may be you are yet to get a book which interests you. If you are not autobiography buff, reading one can be boring for some. A lot of people enjoy fiction, while some others prefer non-fiction. There must be something you find interesting. There are books of every genre. If you could add details about what interests you, may be Quorans can suggest some interesting books on the topic.

There are basically two categories of people interesting in inculcating the habit reading books in themselves- I Have Never Read a Book In My Life Let us say Joe falls under this category. Now let's see how we can make him turn to novels and books in general. 1. Obviously the worst choice from our side would be to hand him "The Prodigal Daughter" and expect him to finish it on his own. He'd probably light it on fire. Big Books and Fat Novels with flamboyant and grandiose vocabulary are a big no-no, since Joe, having not read a single novel will not have English Vocabulary as his strongest area. 2. Now if Joe is really interested in starting a Novel and say, he falls under the age group of 18-25, he would definitely enjoy a thriller. He would definitely completely it if it were a Short Story cum Thriller. 3. Now if Joe is younger than our assumed age-group, it would be safe to hand him "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone". If Joe is older than 25, we could hand him "The Alchemist". This book works for both men and women, but if our teenager is a girl, "Twilight" wouldn't be a bad option either. 4. If Joe isn't interested in novels, then our work becomes relatively easy. If it were a male, of any age group, our safest assumption is this- Men Love Cars. A day or two of Top Gear would having him raving about his new found love for automobiles, though it is our assumption that really brought forth success. Then he'd pick the following month's edition on his own. If the person in question is a female, Nivedita Angels's answer, the last line, is probably safe, I wouldn't know. Let's move to the next category- I Have Lost Touch With Books And Electronic Gadgets Are To Blame Dear Joe, I know that feeling of "When you have the film, why should I ever read the book?" I also know that habit of trying to learn from YouTube videos instead of academic books just to save the time and effort that reading stuff takes. If you're at the stage where you think reading books is a waste of time and effort, then I hope God forgives you, you of all people, who once knew the joy of sitting back and letting the World pass by as you immersed yourself into that place in your imagination where you once finished Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in less than a day.

Lets begin with a reorientation- I prefer to call books as A MINE of knowledge rather than a repository! So, the reason as to why you want to read books in the first place is kinda louche. Next, read books of genres and authors which interest you till you can almost fix youself to sundry topics! So, if you pick up a book on psycology and you love say romantic novels orrr detective ones you are most likely to dump the book after managing the first page. Read fashion magazines maybe if fashion is what interests you! Read Sparks' if love stories entice you!

I don't think the problem lies with reading as an activity. The problem lies with the choice of book. As an avid reader, here's what I suggest as per my experience. If a book cannot sustain your interest, it doesn't cater to your liking. So move on, to another author or another genre, till you find something that truly interests you. Always read the book synopsis to see if it piques your interest, and now with sites like Goodreads, go read some reviews to see whether it makes you want to pick up or skip the book. I hope this helps.
