How is Switzerland in the summer?

Is the summer climate of Switzerland warm enough for the Summer Olympics? If not, how does its climate affect its eligibility to host the Summer Olympics?

  • Answer:

Swiss summers are certainly warm enough but Switzerland has not put in a bid for hosting since the 1960 Summer Olympics (at Lausanne, in case you're wondering, the home of the International Olympic Committee). Switzerland has put in several recent bids for Winter Olympics (2002 Sion, 2006 Sion again, and 2010 Bern), and considered bidding in for the 2014, 2018 and 2022 Olympics, but withdrew. The recent Swiss Winter Olympics bids have not been lavishly funded and what funding they got was approved by referendum. Recent Olympic bribery scandals haven't played well in Switzerland and I think there is some Swiss reticence to spend money competing with less scrupulous countries. Winter games are much smaller affairs than summer games; putting on a Summer Olympics cost London $15.3 billion last time. I don't see any appetite for spending that kind of money hosting an Olympics and being stuck maintaining the leftover infrastructure in Switzerland.
