How do you successfully apply for a job in Kenya?

I have a job offer that requires me to travel to Nigeria, Egypt, Kenya, South Africa. I am currently working in New Delhi. Should I take the offer? How safe are these countries? What are the safest countries in Africa?

  • FYI - The current job as well as the offer are with startups.

Sounds like an exciting opportunity! Not many people get that chance and if you're into travelling- this is a once in a lifetime experience- most likely life changing. That said, I'm originally from Kenya and proud to say that it's a great place to live. The people there are very friendly and the different cultures have so much to offer. Also, if you've ever wanted to do a Safari, Kenya is the best place for that. Another advantage is that the official language of communication in Kenya is English- which I think is pretty standard even in the other African countries you just mentioned. As far as safety- Kenya is one of the safest- and most stable (look it up) the only thing that slightly tarnished this was the 2007 general elections that resulted to some violence. But that's the only time anything like that has ever happened. The next elections are in less than 60 days- everyone is on edge about it. So my advice is, don't make a decision about Kenya until after the elections. All the best in whatever you choose to do. God bless :)

Well, what is you budget like? Is the company willing to let you take taxis rather than public transport, and stay at nicer hotels rather than budget? Are the locations you are traveling to in the capitals, where the airports are? If the answers are yes, you will be absolutely fine. I have ether traveled extensively in the countries you mention, or have good friends living there. Nigeria and South Africa can be a bit risky if you do not know what you are doing. If you go to the wrong areas, you can get in trouble. However, if you take taxis (the right ones) and stay in nice hotels, everything will be absolutely fine. Just make sure you read up on what to look out for in each country before you go and keep you eyes open. Have fun!! Ps. It is impossible to say which African countries are safest. It depends on what you are doing there, where you go within the country, the time at which you travel and a lot of other things. Aside from a couple of countries, Africa in general is perfectly safe if you take the appropriate precautions.

As a Nigerian living in Nigeria, I hear a lot from people from places far and wide and from my office of how unsafe Nigeria is. In actual, some part ofthe country, remain no go areas for foreigners. While some other parts of the country are like a free for all. Places like Lagos and surround states of the South West Geo political Zone. Have a high influx of foreigners living and working with out issues. Particularly Lagos which has a larger population of peoe from various places all living together. Of which a larger concentration of foreigners state on Lagos island,Ikoui,Victoria Island and Lekki areas. While in Abuja the capital of Nigeria. Also features relative peace and high security since its the capital territory. The day life is a bore though but the Night life is something if you can find the right guide. Then there is Port Harcourt based in Rivers state, which is a lovely town to be in all round enjoyable fun but still grapples with cases of kidnapping. So ask yourself. Which part of the country your going to and does it fall under the above fore men.tioned

This sounds like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, especially if the plane tickets are paid for.  Get a Sheba Miles card from Ethiopian Airlines if you aren't connected to the Star Alliance network, and head for the business lounge!  I've been to most places you have mentioned and have had no difficulty.  One thing you might want to ask your prospective employer is about how many days you are expected to be on the road.  If you'll be on the road for most of the year, it may be difficult on the family.  Africa is an up-and-coming place with great opportunities for business.  Best of luck!

I have personally lived in Nigeria for 5 years and my father is still working there. Its is a good country with very helpful people. As in regards with safety, I'd say that, as compared to India, it is ,perhaps, safer to be in Nigeria especially with family. The Delhi case was an eye-opener that India is not at all safe either. I have also lived in Morocco for a year. It is a wonderful country with Spanish culture. It doesn't look like a part of Africa at all. I've visited Kenya which has a large Indian community. So there will never be any problem living there. The accommodations are good and easily available in Nairobi. I also have friends living in Tanzania. From what I've heard it is fine place. Just make sure that the package you are getting is worth being in a slightly less developed country and living with a certain security restrictions which you might have to adhere to if you live in any of these countries. Africa is just clouded by mis-conceptions. It is a perfectly alright place to be.

It is Key mantra: Before applying any job cross verify at every platform. As there are lots of companies who said for international tour but in actual they do not provide. Opportunity is Good, but cross check from your side also. These places are surrounded by many beautiful places and prominent for their work culture . Have a high influx of foreigners living and working with out issues. Particularly they also have larger population of people from various places all living together. If you are still confuse about these place.. You can google it their work culture, standard of living, deflation and so on. You can also get counselling from job portal site like http://merajob.in as there main motive to place employees at best and genuine place.
