Why can I not change button properties via the properties dialog box in Android IDE (Eclipse)?

When I click a property in the properties dialog nothing happens e.g clicking Text Size does nothing so to change text size I have to right-click textView1 > Other Properties > Defined by TextView > Text Size to change the size of text (and then have to repeat for all other properties). I'm completly new to Android dev and I'm just following a tutorial the person in the video is able to simply click and change what he wants through the properties dialog box. I know that I could change these properties in the actual xml code but I'd like to do it through the properties dialog.
