What was an Old show on The N?

What is an appropriate way for a 9 year old to show 'kindness' to an 18 year old in school?

  • My 9-year-old daughter's school is running a project called 'Lent Buddies'. Each member of the school had his/her name put into a hat, and each had to draw another name. Over the next few weeks, each person has to show 'special kindness' to the person whose name was drawn. The draw included pupils and staff. My nine-year old daughter drew out the name of one of the 'gappers' - these are gap year (ie - pre University) students who help in the school for a one year posting before going onto University. How does my daughter show 'kindess' to him?

  • Answer:

A couple (or more) of the following: A hand-drawn picture A thank-you note that really gets into why she appreciates the buddy's presence and help. A hand-decorated T-shirt (small drawing or legend, on a T-shirt of a "good" color.) A largely-symbolic (fairly small) gift certificate, or a gift basket of foods and appetizers that you and your daughter pick out, that the buddy might like.

If you and your child want to really get into the spirit of Lent (I work at a Catholic school...) the child could ask what the older person would appreciate. Your child could make a small sacrifice to help this person (stay after school to clean the board, sort papers, dust a shelf, that kind of thing). Or, if the "gapper" is giving up something for Lent, your child could give up the same thing for a day, if appropriate.
