When do clocks go forward?

When we adjust clocks in Europe (they go back in winter and forward in summer), how much energy are we actually saving?

  • Particularly when clocks go back in winter, days get shorter, and people get more depressed. It is claimed that the reason for the clocks adjustment for summer and winter is purely to save energy. Are there any figures out there where we can see exactly how much energy we are saving during winter?

  • Answer:

First off: Winter time represents the original time. It is Summer Time that is shifted. The switch to Summer Time occurs on the last sunday in March, the switch back to Winter Time on the last sunday in October. The main reason for CEST to continue to exist is historic. Switching costs back to an all-year time zone would be high. Energy savings by daylight savings time are negligible, as recent studies have shown.
