  • Some say the holidays are the best time. Others say the run-up to Super Bowl is the best time. Another camp recommends waiting for March/April since Japanese firms start their fiscal year then and thus release new products around that time as well. When is the best time to buy a TV? When are new TVs released? Is that the same point in time as when they are priced lowest?

    New models start releasing from March until September. It used to be that Best Buy would only update the floor a few times per year, but now I believe there is no such constraint.  In terms of specials, the most common ones are: * Thanksgiving (Black Friday) * Christmas Holidays * Super Bowl * Father's Day or Graduation day * New school year This year, expect also big sales around the Summer Olympics, and in Europe also around the European Soccer Cup tournament All stores have at least one or more weekly specials.

Generally right about this time of year. TVs are some of the most discounted items this time around as they are generally seen as loss-leaders. They get people in the door and then the people buy accessories and other additional items that the retailer can make money on. Also look for well-reviewed sets that were released a year or more ago but are still being manufactured. They will usually be heavily discounted. Beyond that I would say that the cheapest time to buy a TV is usually now. TV manufacturers operate extremely low margin and did a race to the bottom in terms of prices. That means that as soon as they get some kind of efficiency that allows them to lower prices, they do. So prices will always drop. There is always a cheaper TV right around the corner and yesterday's TVs will almost always be more expensive. As a result, when you need a TV, just do your research and then buy the best one for the price you're looking for.
