What specifically are complex information systems?

Looking to the integrated information theory of consciousness, what are some examples of "high phi" systems? What are some examples of "low phi" systems that might seem like they should be high?

  • For those unaware, the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integrated_information_theory of Consciousness is actually a very believable attempt at quantifying consciousness and intelligence. It's essentially an equation that correlates information carrying capacity, and integration. Follow this question so it hopefully gets bumped up and in front of more of the brains on Quora :)

  • Answer:

According to Tononi, when you eat ice cream, you cannot separate the taste of the sugar on your tongue from the sensation of the melting liquid coating the inside your mouth. Phi is a measure of the extent to which a given system—for example, a brain circuit—is capable of fusing these distinctive bits of information. The more distinctive the information, and the more specialized and integrated a system is, the higher its phi. To Tononi, phi directly measures consciousness; the higher your phi, the more conscious you are. Insects are typically said to be "low-phi", while primates, some felines and canines, and humans are said to be "high-phi", depending on their stage of development. However, it has once been stated that a computer is "low-phi". Typically, a computer does not have "consciousness", but many computers can seperate images with extremely minor differences. A computer, or at least most systems,  can't distinguish sound or smell, but ones with fingerprint technology can differentiate one person's fingerprint from 7 billion other fingerprints.
