Does using a VoIP software (Skype?) on a cell phone work well?

Have you replaced your cell phone service using Google Voice and Skype? Or any other combination?

  • I am interested in one day replacing my cell phone service with some sort of combination of Google Voice and a VoIP service (likely Skype) that uses only a data connection. Like many other people I have almost no need for the minimal, but required, purchase of cell phone minutes from my mobile carrier. If I could subscribe to a data-only package of some kind, I'd be all set (I think). Perhaps there is a way to use a mobile hotspot (such as a MiFi) to achieve this data-only service. Has anyone done something along these lines?

  • Answer:

For the data side, T-mobile has a plan that includes 100 minutes, unlimited text and 5GB of 4G web (EDGE speed after that) for $30. As for the talk side, Skype is not very good because it uses the video camera mic (on Android anyway). You should look into a SIP number though. Something like GrooveIP would work till May when it gets shutdown.
